Screen with a scored test, not a hunch

A short, consistent assessment answers the question a phone screen usually guesses at, and it asks every candidate the same thing in the same order.

Assessments in Surhires are templates you build, send from an application, and score. Candidates complete an attempt, reviewers see the answers alongside the candidate record, and the score attaches to the application. Basic time-locking ships today; camera proctoring and copy-paste blocking are Wave 2.

Consistency is the point, not difficulty

The argument for assessments is not that they are harder than a conversation. It is that they are the same for everyone. A phone screen drifts with the recruiter's mood, the time of day and how much the previous call ran over. Two candidates for the same role are routinely asked different questions and then compared as though they were not.

An assessment fixes the input. Every candidate for a requisition answers the same questions, in the same order, under the same time limit, and is scored against the same rubric. That does not make the result infallible, but it makes it comparable, and comparable is the property that a shortlist actually needs.

Templates, questions and rubrics

An assessment template holds a set of questions, a time allowance and a scoring rubric. Question types cover multiple choice, single choice, free text, numeric response and file upload for work-sample tasks. Multiple choice and numeric questions score automatically; free text and file uploads go to a human reviewer with the rubric on screen.

Templates are reusable and versioned. A firm typically builds a handful per discipline rather than one per requisition, and attaches the appropriate one when the job is created. Because a template is versioned, changing a question next quarter does not retrospectively alter how an attempt from this quarter was scored.

  • Multiple choice, single choice, free text, numeric and file-upload question types
  • Automatic scoring for objective questions, manual scoring against a rubric for the rest
  • Per-template time allowance and question ordering
  • Versioned templates, so historic attempts keep the rubric they were scored against
  • Attach at requisition level so every applicant for that role gets the same assessment

Sending, attempting and reviewing

An assessment is sent from the application rather than from a separate tool, so the invitation, the attempt and the result all sit on the record the recruiter is already looking at. The candidate receives a link, completes the attempt in the browser, and the submission returns to the application.

Reviewers work through attempts from an attempts view with the candidate record beside the answers. Scoring is recorded per question with the rubric visible, and the total attaches to the application so it can be used as a filter on the shortlist. An unscored attempt shows as outstanding rather than sitting silently, which is usually where assessment processes fall over.

An assessment can be attached to the requisition so every applicant receives the same one automatically, or sent by hand at a particular stage where only a shortlist warrants it. High-volume desks tend to attach at the requisition and use the score as a first filter. Retained and executive desks tend to send by hand, later, and treat the result as one more piece of evidence in a long conversation. The mechanics are identical either way, and the choice is a judgement about the role rather than a setting we make for you.

The limits, stated plainly

Basic time-locking ships today: an attempt has a time allowance and it closes when the allowance runs out. That is the whole of the integrity story at present.

Camera proctoring and copy-paste blocking are Wave 2. Today, a candidate can open another tab, and nothing in the product will know. If your process depends on supervised conditions, either invigilate the assessment yourself or use a dedicated assessment platform for that stage. We would rather write that sentence than let a feature list imply a controlled environment we do not currently provide.

What an assessment score should and should not decide

A score is one input. Treated as a gate that automatically rejects below a threshold, an assessment becomes an automated employment decision, with the notice, record-keeping and audit obligations that attracts in some jurisdictions. Treated as evidence a human weighs alongside the rest of the record, it is a straightforward improvement on guessing.

Surhires records which candidates were assessed, what they scored and who reviewed the attempt, which is the data an independent bias audit would need. Commissioning that audit, issuing candidate notice where it is required, and deciding whether a score may reject anybody are yours. The product supports the record; it does not certify the process.

Where dedicated platforms are the better answer

Surhires is not an assessment platform, and the anti-position on the pricing page says so. Technical coding assessments, psychometrics and validated cognitive testing are specialist products with their own research behind them, and for a role where that depth matters you should use one.

What is built here suits the far commoner case: a short, role-specific screening set that separates the candidates worth a call from the ones who applied to everything. Where you need the specialist tool, the assessment integration pages carry the real status of each connector rather than a logo wall.

What you get

Assessment templates

Reusable question sets per discipline, attached at requisition level rather than rebuilt each time.

Five question types

Multiple choice, single choice, free text, numeric response and file upload for work samples.

Automatic scoring

Objective questions score themselves; the reviewer only handles what genuinely needs judgement.

Rubric scoring

Free text and file uploads scored against a visible rubric so two reviewers agree more often.

Template versioning

Editing a question next quarter does not change how last quarter's attempt was scored.

Send from the application

Invitation, attempt and result live on the record the recruiter is already working.

Attempts view

Every outstanding and completed attempt in one queue, with the candidate record alongside.

Score on the application

The total attaches to the application and can be used to filter a shortlist.

Outstanding attempt flags

An unscored or unstarted attempt is surfaced rather than quietly waiting forever.

Basic time-locking

A per-template time allowance that closes the attempt when it expires. That is the current limit.

Assessment audit data

Who was assessed, what they scored and who reviewed it, exportable for an independent audit.

Proctoring, later

Camera proctoring and copy-paste blocking are Wave 2 and are not available today.

Questions recruiters ask

Is the assessment proctored?

No. Basic time-locking ships today and that is the extent of it. Camera proctoring and copy-paste blocking are Wave 2. A candidate today can open another tab and the product will not know. If supervised conditions matter for a particular stage, invigilate it yourself or use a dedicated assessment platform for that stage.

Can an assessment automatically reject a candidate?

You can configure a score as a filter, but we would advise against automatic rejection. A threshold that rejects without human review turns the assessment into an automated employment decision, which carries notice and audit obligations in some jurisdictions. Treat the score as evidence a person weighs, and keep the decision with the person.

Do you provide the question banks?

No. You build the templates. Surhires is not an assessment platform and does not publish validated content or psychometrics, so we do not supply questions and would not want you relying on ours as though they had research behind them. Where you need validated testing, use a specialist provider for that stage.

Can candidates complete assessments on a phone?

Yes for the question types that suit a small screen, which is most of them. File-upload work samples are usually better on a desktop, and a candidate given a long free-text task on a phone will produce a worse answer than the same candidate at a keyboard. Consider that when you set the time allowance.

What data does an assessment leave behind for an audit?

Which candidates were invited, which attempted, what each scored per question, which template version was used and who reviewed the attempt, all exportable. That is the material an independent bias audit needs. Commissioning the audit and issuing any candidate notice remain your responsibility, not ours.

Do assessments work for contract and temp desks?

They can, though the economics differ. A five-minute compliance or licence-verification set makes sense for a high-volume temp desk where the same checks repeat every week. A forty-minute technical assessment usually does not, because the candidate is choosing between three agencies and will complete it for none of them.

See it against your own reqs

Bring one live role and three resumes. In twenty minutes you will see the match scores, the shortlist and the placement invoice that comes out the other end.
